It all came as a great shock. Everyone in the small Iraqi neighborhood could not stop talking about Ashmir’s disappearance and conversion to Christianity. A sense of betrayal had consumed Sami’s thoughts and everyday life ever since he found out the news. How could his childhood friend turn away from Allah? How could he betray his community, his family and put himself in so much danger? With Ashmir gone, Sami could only turn to the Internet to read more about the lie fed to his friend. After watching a couple of YouTube videos explaining Christianity, Sami felt even more confused about his friend’s decision. How could he believe that Jesus died for his sins without wanting anything in return? How can there be such love?
Knowing the repercussions of exploring Christianity, Sami only searched the internet while his family was sleeping. One evening, Sami came across a Global Media Outreach website. Filled with anger towards Christians for taking away his friend, Sami was seeking a confrontation, but instead, he found the opposite. Benjamin, his Online Missionary, responded to all of his questions with patience, compassion and love.
Benjamin’s demeanor toward Sami’s demands led to many deep conversations because of his new friend. Because of the grace he experienced in these conversations, Sami could not resist the love of Jesus and invited Him into his life. Sami could not contain the unexplainable joy in his heart, but he was also afraid. Afraid that if anyone found out that he was a follower of Jesus, it could lead to his death. However, his love for Jesus intensified when he read Isaiah 41:10,
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Sami faces the daily reality that he could die for his faith, but the sight of death doesn’t scare him anymore. He has eternity to look forward to with his Savior.
